The festival is fundamentally a singing contest in medieval costume between the "Nobilissima Parte di Sopra" (Guelfa) (The Nobles from above) and the "Magnifica Parte di Sotto" (Ghibellina) (the Magnificence from below) by singing songs and ditties in medieval style.

St Rufino's Palio (25/26 August)
The last Thursday, Friday and Saturday of August of every year the Society of Crossbowman of Assisi celebrate their "Palio of Saint Rufino" and the crossbowmen, representing the three parts of the city (San Francesco, San Rufino, Dive Marie), battle for victory. The festival includes everyone dressed in costume, and during these days you will see medieval banquets and shows of very type and torch light processions.
